| Pro-wrestling in UK
Although WWE is considered synonymous with professional wrestling worldwide, within the boundaries of the United Kingdom, World of Sport helped to launch illustrious careers of many wrestlers during the mid 1960s.Mick McManus, Count Bartelli, Giant Haystacks, Jackie Pallo, Big Daddy, and Kendo Nagasaki gained an iconic status in UK Wrestling thanks to this show.
Wrestling was initially launched as a variety act in bodybuilder strongman contests. Wrestlers gained support from the audience, or were subjected to intense criticism, being based on the credibility of each fight they either won or lost. Rapid developments in UK Wrestling brought Russian Greco-Roman grappler George Hackenschmidt to the country, and Charles B. Cochran upcoming promoter and entrepreneur quickly signed Hackenschmidt to his enterprise. His technique of wrestling was moulded from being legitimately dominant to a more flamboyant and enjoyable style, so that crowd interest could be sustained, thus paving way for modern day sports entertainment.
Joint Promotions was created in 1948 by a group of upcoming promoters. They agreed to introduce new talent to UK wrestling, block out rival promoters and soon developed a stronghold. But by 1975, the stronghold of Joint promotions had almost crumbled, many of its founding members retiring and the company being bought out several times, leading to the wrestling industry being run by an inexperienced public company. The empire of UK wrestling, began to break-up during the early 1980s when some newspapers started exposing the pre-planned aspects of the sport.
On September 28, 1985, World of Sport was taken off the air. While Wrestling got its own show, the time slot changed from week to week, driving away the regular audience. Contract for World of Sport expired, and they were forced to share rights with All Star Promotions and the upcoming World Wrestling Federation.
With the advent of Digital satellite television UK wrestling has once again begun to make resurgence. This re-interest in wrestling led to the production of the world’s first wrestling channel, simply known as The Wrestling Channel.
